Door Adjustment Tips

Whether it's an interior or exterior door, improper closure can lead to several issues. It may either scratch against the door jamb or leave a gap that's too large, potentially causing air leaks. This problem is more critical with exterior doors as larger gaps can result in significant heat loss. Often, these issues arise from doors being installed unevenly—a common but fixable problem.

Assessing the Issue

To check the alignment of your door, close it (if possible) and observe the gap between the door and its jamb. A uniformly equal gap across the jamb suggests a proper installation.

Simple Solutions

When the door scratches the door jamb:

  • Replace one of the hinge screws with a longer screw (3 inches). Opting to replace the middle screw is most effective, as it will reach the wood framing behind the jamb, pulling the door back into alignment.

When there is a large gap:

  • Insert a piece of cardboard or thick paper behind the hinge on the side opposite the large gap. This adjustment shifts the door closer to the jamb, thereby narrowing the gap. If this adjustment isn’t enough, a reinstallation of the door may be necessary.
